Dan developed a Water Ski and Boat Rental business (Penticton Water Sports Ltd.), on 2 locations in Penticton at the age of 20 and had a staff of 10 persons (for 5 years).
At age 28, he started a chain of Hallmark Card & Gift Shops with a brother-in-law as partner (under the name of L’Amour Card & Gift Shops, which grew within 7 years to 10 stores in Alberta and BC, with a multi- million dollar volume and over 60 employees. Prior to starting this chain of stores, Dan worked as a salesman for Hallmark Cards. In the first 2 years, he sold and installed over 1100 feet (335 metres) of new fixtures. He was honoured with their national “Rookie of the Year” award in his first year, became an Account Manager after 2 years, and was in their national “Top Ten” producers in the entire 3 years that he was with Hallmark.
He simultaneously farmed 320 acres, north of Edmonton, with grain and cattle.
He was a moving consultant for Williams Moving and Storage for 4 years and achieved Consultant Club status (reserved for the top 20 United Van Line salespersons out of a national sales force of about 1100) in two of those four years.
Dan was a sales manager for St. George Moving and Storage and realized 30% yearly growth during his time with this company.
In 1994, Dan started a business (Abbey Therapeutic Services Inc.) which grew into a multi-million dollar business, with over 60 persons working for his business. It provided therapeutic and rehab services to high risk foster children, brain injured persons, general rehab needs and senior care. Besides the general public, clients included the Ministry for Children & Family Development, ICBC, Worksafe BC, and the Sto-Lo Nation. He sold this business in 2002.
Dan operated an ESL School (Abbey Training Centre) for 3 years.
Dan operated an online business for 8 years (Green Earth Alternatives, Inc.)
Dan was the Executive Director of Childcare International, an international child sponsorship program, for 2 years. In his first year with them, he took the organization from a deficit position to a positive year-end position. He also initiated some major changes to bring the charity into CRA compliance.
